Despite its obvious problems, the open-office model has continued to encroach on workers across the country. Now, about 70 percent of U.S. offices have no or low partitions, according to the International Facility Management Association. Silicon Valley has been the leader in bringing down the dividers. Google, Yahoo, eBay, Goldman Sachs and American Express are all adherents.  Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg enlisted famed architect Frank Gehry to design the largest open floor plan in the world, housing nearly 3,000 engineers. And as a businessman, Michael Bloomberg was an early adopter of the open-space trend, saying it promoted transparency and fairness. He famously carried the model into city hall when he became mayor of New York,  making “the Bullpen” a symbol of open communication and accessibility to the city’s chief.

This is the top floor of the test house. All kits tested have their router/base access point installed in the network closet. Three-piece kits have their satellite access points in Bedroom 2 and the Kitchen for normal setups, or Living Room TV and the Den for multi-hop testing. Orbi’s satellite AP was placed at the Living Room TV, with a second satellite AP placed in Office 1 for its version of “Easy Mode” testing. Plume’s satellite pods were at Bedroom 2, Living Room TV, Kitchen, Office 1, Den, and Office 2. Jim Salter Note the easy, straight-down shot from Bedroom 2 to Office 2 and Downstairs Bath, from Living Room TV to Den, and from Kitchen to Bedroom 3. If you need to handle multiple floors, you should definitely have a good idea what’s above what and plan accordingly for the cleanest angles and shortest shots from one floor to the next.

Instead, I responded to both companies with a compromise. Why not leave placement to the experts? I sent my floor plans over to Google and AmpliFi—as well as offering the same opportunity to Eero, Orbi, and Plume—and allowed these companies to make location recommendations as detailed as they’d like. If my role in testing was purely reading the measurements, would the results be different?

These new floor plans are ideal for maximizing a company’s space while minimizing costs. Bosses love the ability to keep a closer eye on their employees, ensuring clandestine porn-watching, constant social media-browsing and unlimited personal cellphone use isn’t occupying billing hours. But employers are getting a false sense of improved productivity. A 2013 study found that many workers in open offices are frustrated by distractions that lead to poorer work performance. Nearly half of the surveyed workers in open offices said the lack of sound privacy was a significant problem for them and more than 30 percent complained about the lack of visual privacy. Meanwhile, “ease of interaction” with colleagues — the problem that open offices profess to fix — was cited as a problem by fewer than 10 percent of workers in any type of office setting. In fact, those with private offices were least likely to identify their ability to communicate with colleagues as an issue. In a previous study, researchers concluded that “the loss of productivity due to noise distraction … was doubled in open-plan offices compared to private offices.”

Erica Rand June 5, 2017 I used this app to create a floor plan for zoning purposes for a house that I am in the process of selling. As a novice, I found this tool rather intuitive and relatively easy to use compared to other similar apps/sites I found. I used the free version and it was a lifesaver!! Full Review

If you’re a building owner and would like to report a problem with a floor plan or non-public building like a private residence, report a data problem. If you would like to request that an indoor map be removed, include the words “indoor takedown” in the description of the issue.

The old showbiz adage continues to hold true (even in Wi-Fi testing): you can’t please everyone. Shortly after our last round of mesh Wi-Fi testing, in which a six-pack of Plume devices surprised the field, e-mails arrived from both the Google Wifi and AmpliFi HD teams. The results weren’t representative of their devices, they said, and perhaps I placed the devices badly. Both companies suggested placing an access point (AP) downstairs instead of all three APs being upstairs.

More details are coming, but one important quick takeaway is that “Easy Mode” means different things for different competitors. Plume didn’t actually get an “Easy Mode,” because it roamed properly and rapidly everywhere. Orbi’s “Easy Mode” was the addition of a second satellite AP, which was ridiculous overkill in the 3,500-square-foot test house. Google Wifi, AmpliFi HD, and Eero all received quite a bit more cajoling in Easy Mode. This could mean running a few extra tests at a site where roaming happened late or manually unplugging and re-plugging my USB3 test wNIC when roaming went badly. In AmpliFi HD’s case, Easy Mode even involved some rather heroic measures and a lot of cursing.

Google Wifi and AmpliFi HD both unintentionally hamstrung themselves with the company recommendations to place an AP downstairs. Bedroom 3, Office 2, and the car are all nearly invisible for both kits on Hard Mode—and placement is the major reason. Downstairs clients tended to prefer to make their own connection directly to an upstairs AP, even when poked and prodded at. Remember, that connection was farther away since, rather than having an upstairs AP directly above Office 2 and Bedroom 3, there was now only one upstairs AP farther away from both. There were also quite a few connections from upstairs clients to the downstairs AP, which muddied things up even worse.
