Tender Bar And Kitchen

Tender Bar + Kitchen will close on April 22. “We’re proud of what we did and the concept we’ve brought. We had a ton of success with Tender. But it’s time to move on,” says owner Jeff Catalina, who was calling from London. Tender, celebrated for its outstanding bespoke and classic cocktails, opened four years ago in Lawrenceville with what was billed as a “Dream Team” of bartenders (Fredrick Arnold, Sarah Clarke, Nathan Lutchansky, Craig Mrusek, Marie Perriello and Sean Rosenkrans). It continued to be a top spot for some Pittsburgh’s best bartenders throughout its run. We honored Tender as “Best Classic Cocktail Bar” in Pittsburgh Magazine’s recent Best Bars in Pittsburgh feature. Tender’s kitchen also had a shining — if too short — moment under the leadership of chef Brian Little. Pittsburgh Magazine’s independent Restaurant Review Panel named Tender as a Best Restaurant 2015 primarily because of Little’s culinary talent. “Even in four years you make a dent in the community,” Catalina says. “We’ve had first dates at Tender and engagements at Tender.” I’ll always have a soft spot for Tender. In addition to imbibing more than a few delicious cocktails and having some marvelous conversations at the bar, it also is where I was introduced to Jannamico Super Punch, the only amaro that’s imported directly to Pittsburgh. I’ll have a spoonful for you tonight, Tender.

Tender Bar And Kitchen

Tender Bar + Kitchen is an American cocktail lounge & restaurant that celebrates a return to a past era. Cocktails are crafted with pride and in the classic tradition by respected professionals behind the bar. Cuisine is prepared in a scratch kitchen, with local, sustainably grown produce, meats, and fish as often as possible. The space is open, the atmosphere warm and inviting, the design a reflection on early 20th century lifestyle. Tender draws inspiration, and its name, from the Arsenal Bank building it occupies – a storied financial institution that served the Lawrenceville community, exchanging legal tender for its patrons for over a century.

I met a colleague for a business dinner. We ended up sitting at the bar, our request, and had a great time. The bartenders were thoughtful and knew when, and more importantly when not, to interrupt our conversation.Drinks were great and the food was very good. I recommend Tender. The only negative comment I have is that parking is an issue they have to eventually address.

We had dined at Tender a couple of times previously and very much enjoyed the food and drinks. This time we had dinner as part of Pittsburgh Restaurant Week and our experience was very much mixed. While the drinks were top notch as always, the food was hit and miss. My salmon dish was tasty, but my wife's salad was dry and the dressing was all vinegar and no oil. In addition it seemed that her noodles and chicken dish had been under a heat lamp way too long and was not very flavorful.

We had an amazing dinner at Tender, this is the second time and I have nothing bad to say. I am always pleased with their new and unusual cocktail creations and everything meal we got in our party of 5 was great. It was a little too dark in the back room and a bit cold, but other than that it was a stellar night.

Tender is closing so I would not recommend to a friend. We went back for one last hurrah and the menu was very limited. The food was decent, but a little on the cheaply made side for the price (i.e our potato skins were commercially-made steak fries with sour cream and bacon on top. Not a quality I would expect in a place like that). Also – initially – our waiter was very good and on point, but about half way through he disappeared and we couldn't get our drinks nor desert. I will miss my memories there, but given its current state, I am not surprised it is closing.

We came here for your restaurant week special, and the experience was great. I have only been here before for drinks, and I was looking forward to trying your food. The service was fast and polite. The burger was amazing. My only criticism is that I wish the burger had come with a small side dish. Overall, I was really impressed with my Tender experience!

Great gazpacho, olive appetizer was simple and delicious. This visit, among many others, I had the Tender Burger, but the chicken and pork dishes at neighboring tables were receiving great reviews.Service is always friendly and prompt.

emeMay 12, 2015My favorite cocktail bar in PGH so far. Love the friendly, attentive and customized service (shout-out to Cass!). Extensive and impressive list that extends to liquor/spirits. Lounge space available.

The restaurant has an innovative menu of interesting small plates–cauliflower with buffalo sauce, fried artichoke hearts, hot olives with rose ary, and radishes were our choice. The only main course was a wonderful hamburger with greens, cheese, and other toppings, as well as a special. Great for grazing. The bar had more liquor bottles than i have ever seen with an interesting list of special cocktails. The apple crisp with homemade salted caramel ice cream was outstanding. Our waiter Mark was fantastic. A great place for a casual meal, heavy on small plates.

Max SteinApril 10, 2013Been here 25+ timesJust because you're in a Prohibition-era cocktail bar, don't be afraid to order a tiki drink like the Zombie or Navy Grog. Craig Mrusek is one of the masters when it comes to Polynesian cocktails.

The location is good, right in the heart of Lawrenceville, but parking could be an issue depending on when you visit. I was fortunately able to find a spot on Butler St. I had made a reservation and recommend you do the same. The space inside the restaurant is very small and I only saw about 12 tables, mostly 2 tops. The service at this restaurant is top notch! Super friendly and attentive without being overly attentive. At first glance I thought the menu was limited and very basic, but the overall quality and flavor of the dishes proved to me that sticking to what you excel at is a good idea. We started out with the potato skins appetizer. Although I was expecting more than just the potatoes with chives and a dipping sauce, the flavor and texture were great. She had the burger and I had the NY Strip. The burger had the best flavors of any burger ever. The server said the secret “pub sauce” gives it its unique flavor. It was amazing. The NY Strip had excellent flavor as well. It was cooked perfectly rare as I had requested. The steak came with some fingerling potatoes and an eggplant medley which when paired with the steak created the most unique and flavorful combination. I loved it. The beer and cocktail selections are good too. We were too full for desert. Overall this was a great experience. When I first saw the basic menu, I was a bit disappointed, but once I received my food and tasted the quality and flavorful execution I was won over. The service was top notch. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, and I will certainly plan to return.
